Wells that don’t hold water

The thing about water is that I don’t crave it when I have only been filling myself with other things.  When I use water as my main thirst quencher, the other things, like sodas, are tasty but they don’t quench thirst as well. I think that is true spiritually as well! When I am unsatisfied with my life and want to live a fulfilled meaningful life, I need to fill myself with Jesus and his word and nothing else! I am notorious for looking for satisfaction somewhere besides Jesus. And there are lots of good and tasty ways to grow in faith but I have discovered that they do not quench my thirst; I don’t necessarily desire Jesus more!

We’re always looking around, trying to find something to make our lives happy and significant. We think, “If I just sign up for this study or buy this CD or join this small group, God will satisfy me.” God does use those things but they are the cup!  The only way to be satisfied is when I am able to drink the living water because of these things!

The Bible says in Jeremiah 2:13, “My people have done two evils: They have turned away from me, the spring of living water. And they have dug their own wells, which are broken wells that cannot hold water”. (NCV).

Not only have we rejected God and not looked to him to meet all our needs and satisfy our lives; we’re also trying to meet our needs on our own. These wells we’ve dug aren’t going to hold water.
