Something I used to eat #28
My brother and I were reminiscing about some of the things we used to have at meals growing up with some regularity. Some things we miss with fondness like flank steak and beef stroganoff. We remember how my mom prepared our baked potatoes and the skins (which we still both eat that way). Other foods neither of us would ever eat again but we used to enjoy, including bananas with Miracle Whip and crushed peanuts.
Food has changed over the years and potluck type casseroles, jello salads and meals prepared with Lawry’s packets or boxed meals are pretty much deemed unhealthy if you can even find them on a grocery store shelf. I remember when Jim and I started dating he hated Mexican food, especially tacos. I told him that if this relationship was going to work he was going to have to learn to like it …. and he did! By the time he died he ate more things than I would even try!
It is interesting how my kids’ generation -probably in part as a reaction to the older generation- eats so healthy. They eschew soda, processed eats and junk food. They don’t use canned or frozen vegetables. They like whole grains, whole foods and they take the time to cook. They buy organic and fresh.
Maybe our taste buds or digestive systems change over time. I can no longer eat many things I used to, but I don’t even like them anymore anyway! It is probably a good thing.
I don’t eat meat anymore, but fondly recall Dad and Dave cooking skirt steak on the Weber grill for dinner – at least once a week. I loved that meat…
