Happy New School Year #35

It is almost “New Year’s” – for me September and back-to-school has always felt more like a new year than January 1st. January just feels like an extension of the Christmas holidays, but clean-up mode.

We used to get new clothes, notebooks, shoes, and similar paraphernalia. Everything was clean and crisp. It was a chance to start over, to start fresh, to create a new narrative. Now, years later, while I am done with school, have no kids at home in school and I am no longer teaching, it still feels fresh.

We all get to choose how we get along, get through the day, manage the season. I think everyone is just about as happy as they want to be. This is also the beginning of the season that triggers tears and melancholy for me, which means I need to work even harder how I respond.

It might be like a forced attitude realignment – and I hope it fits every year.
