My Friend Bill

What feels like a long time ago – and it was – we moved to Scottsdale and joined in ministry with a family of believers known as First Baptist Church of Scottsdale. We were privileged to know, befriend and love many new people, some for a season and others for a lifetime. Some we led and taught and but as many taught and poured into us. One of those was Bill Tuten. Bill and his family faithfully reflected Christ to our family and have continued to do so until today. Last week God called Bill home, so I am reflecting on this godly man who loved God, loved the Word and loved his family well. If I was to give a eulogy of my friend, I would include that he was a man of integrity and he relied on God as his faith guided his life. I would also say that his life could be preached as his own funeral sermon. The longer I knew him, the more I grew in my appreciation of just how remarkable he was. Bill was kind and thoughtful and always asked good questions and respectfully listening to the answers. I think that one of the highest compliments you can give a person these days is: He is a good man. It is powerful in its simplicity but there was never a more genuine reflection of my friend Bill. He was a good man. Bill’s life is a testament to God’s grace and faithfulness and his (and Zelma’s) legacy lives on in Derrick and Deirdre. I love this man and his family. Even though he finished well, I rejoice that his story is really just beginning, and I look forward to seeing him again.
